I am not sure what is missing, I get the following error

jwsmith:~ jonathanwsmith$ ng4ex xy01n -clean
Resource directory </Users/jonathanwsmith/ncl_ncarg-5.1.1.MacOS_i386_9.7.0/lib/ncarg/lib/ncarg/resfiles> does not exist.

It looks like things are working then! Did you try "ng4ex" again?
This time, do *not* put the "./" in front of it:

    ng4ex xy01n -clean
