chris,
you do not need to download those scripts from the web. they come with the
NCL distribution.
change your load command to:
load "$NCARG_ROOT/lib/ncarg/nclscripts/csm/gsn_code.ncl"
load "$NCARG_ROOT/lib/ncarg/nclscripts/csm/gsn_csm.ncl"
run with those lines and let us know if you are still getting a
syntax error.
