    michael,
    we have two built-in functions that will accept random data.

    natgrid:
    http://ngwww.ucar.edu/ngdoc/ng/ref/ncl/functions/natgrid.html

    and
    dsgrid:
    http://ngwww.ucar.edu/ngdoc/ng/ref/ncl/functions/natgrid.html

    you will need to create the lat/lon array that you want to grid to.
