problem with vncserver and BackingStore

I'm posting this for the archive in case someone else runs across this
problem.

PROBLEM: Under X11, ncl requires that backing store be turned on
(see http://ngwww.ucar.edu/ngdoc/ng/ug/ncl/gsun/nclfaq.html#BackingStore,
and note that the XF86Config references need to be updated now that xorg
is the default on most Linux distributions).

However, the vncserver that comes with Redhat Fedora Core 3
(http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/upgrade-notes.html)
silently suppresses this change, since it is compiled with a version
of Xvnc that doesn't have backing store turned on.

SOLUTION: For Fedora core 3, at least, switch to tightVNC-server,
(tightvnc-server-1.3dev7-1.i386.rpm from http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html).

This turns out to be a particularly hard problem to debug if you're working
at home using vnc ;-)

Regards, Phil
