Hi Michael,

You've raised a couple of issues:

Firstly, assuming you are talking about the CRU2nc.tgz package, it is
not a CRU program! Like all the software it is contributed, so
problems with it must be addressed to the author. Sorry! The data is
supplied with a description of the format, that's where the line was
drawn.

I sort of agree, but 'user friendly'? *laughs* - maybe it is for
those (myself included) who regularly work with large datasets. But
for many people it's completely inappropriate and bewildering, the
popularity of my ASCIIfied NCAR Reanalysis Data (http://
www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/ncep/) is testament to that. I agree that
many of these users are probably using Excel (or something equally
alarming) for data analysis, but if they don't have the programming
skills (or resources) to use more nuts & bolts applications, then
those are the limits they (and we) have to work within.

Although no decisions have been made yet, (and it's not going to be
up to me!), I'm hoping we'll make the data available in ASCII *and*
binary forms - if so, I'll be pushing for NetCDF to be the latter!

Cheers

Harry
