Thanks for the help given... and I can now respond top my own query
should anyone else be interested in converting from netcdf to grib. I
should add that this response is based on input from various folks, and
more particularly from a local colleage!

The CDO package will do the required task:
CDI (Climate Data Interface) from
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/fileadmin/software/cdi/ cdi-1.0.0.tar.gz
CDO (Climate Data Operators) from
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/fileadmin/software/cdo/ cdo-1.0.7.tar.gz
(you need grib code too)
So for our model which produces output on a rotated lat/lon grid, the
command
cdo -f grb -g nzlam.grid copy nzlam.nc nzlam.grib
(where nzlam.grid contains the rotated grid parameters)
produced a GRIB file that MetView could read and remap correctly.
