Hi Lawrence,

I don't think we have access to 2.96 compilers anymore, but we are
going fully open source with NCL, and I can give you a sneak preview
of the 5.0.0 source code if you like, so you can build it yourself.

You will need to build some external packages, like HDF4 and netCDF 3
(at a minimum), but these two generally aren't that hard.

If you want to give this a try, send me a personal email and
I'll help you get started.
