Most CCSM [CAM] outputs contain the variable:

       float PHIS(time, lat, lon) ;
                PHIS:units = "m2/s2" ;
                PHIS:long_name = "Surface geopotential" ;
 
  ELEV = PHIS/9.80665 ; m
  ELEV_at_long_name = "sfc elevation"
  ELEV_at_units = "m"
