Thanks for this great tip. I uploaded the smoothed version for
comparison, too. It's barely different from the "nice" one, but the
plotting remains fast. I suspect that maybe cnFillMode="AreaFill" should
only be used for sparse grids? If so, a hint in the documentation would
be helpful.

Anyway, that was the only "NCL plotting performance problem" I
encountered so far, so I am less worried now!
