For #1 only: I don't think there is any back navigation in the
current X11 output driver with NCL.

I have found it very useful for this purpose to switch the output
device to PDF, then browse the output file with a separate reader
such as Adobe Reader. With fast bidirectional navigation, easy
zooming, and flexible print options, it's great for multi-frame
browsing. This performs better overall than the limited set of
Postscript tools that I have tried. HTH.
