minor tick marks on histograms

Is there a way to turn on x-axis minor tick marks when plotting with
gsn_histogram()? I can set the major tick marks and their labels
explicitly, overriding the default labeling, but setting
"res_hist_at_tmXBMinorOn = True" and "res_hist_at_tmXBMinorValues =
fspan(beg,end,ntics)" seems to have no effect.
