It should be noted that "cancor" has had issues [seg fault]
with some input datasets.

It may be best to use R ... if you have that available.
[NCL offers *no* support when using R.]

Maybe something like:

     x2d = onedtond( ndtooned(X(lat|:,lon|:,time)), (/nlat*mlon, ntim/) )
     y2d = onedtond( ndtooned(Y(lat|:,lon|:,time)), (/nlat*mlon, ntim/) )
