Dear David,
Files used in GrADS are binary files that have not any header explaining his
structure what is done by external ctl files. Please, take a look into
http://grads.iges.org/grads/gadoc/aboutgriddeddata.html
to see more about GrADS files. In that page, example programs in fortran are
provided.
