Its not clear to me the Salton Sea is in the map database; it doesn't
appear in example #9, which uses the Earth..2 map dataset:

Are you using a higher resolution map dataset?:
http://ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Graphics/Resources/mp.shtml (see the
mpDataSetName resource)
Another approach might be to use a shapefile, if you track one down
for the SS:
