I do not think there is a 'handy-dandy' function to do this.

There are several EGR formulations. What do you propose?

You can use

http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/center_finite_diff_n.shtml

to calculate the required horizontal and vertical gradients.
