Hi Mark,

The simplest way to do this is by setting map fill resources in various ways. I suggest you look at the
masking examples at http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/mask.shtml, particularly mask_2.ncl, mask_4.ncl, and mask_8.ncl.
