If you're running on *nix, you can do it in the shell (via ncl) with the
following command:

oldPng = "/home/kerfoot/sandbox/maxserv.000001.png";
system("/bin/mv " + oldPng + " $(echo " + oldPng + " | /bin/sed
'{s/\.[0-9]\{6\}\.png/.png/g}')");

This tells sed to replace .000001.png (or any combination of exactly 6
digits) with .png
