maximum filename length

hello there,

My NCL code was crashing with the dreaded "segmentation fault"... after
some time, I realized the only thing I had changed was the length of the
output PDF filename.

...and indeed changing this:

outfile="/scratch/tompkins/vectri/dublin/vectri_sresa1b_bccr_bcm2_0_run1_ymonstd_lon27-42.0_lat-12-6.0_date20960101-21000101_ymonstd_cases_ratio"

to something shorter got the code working again.

Can I ask,
1. what is the maximum filename length allowable?
2. Perhaps there could be an error handler to catch this in
gsn_open_wks, since a segmentation fault is a nightmare to track down (I
was lucky I had only made one change).

thanks again as always,

Adrian
