dBZ and max dBZ

Hi all, I have a very quick/easy question about the dBZ and max dBZ
diagnostics. I just am slightly confused as to how these are calculated.
Is max dBZ the max of the entire atmospheric column, or is it the max over
a range of time? Similarly, what is dBZ calculating, is it only the dBZ at
a specific eta level?
