gsn_attach_plots

I am trying to attach 2 zonal plots to a base map created using
gsn_csm_map.

(0) Warning: gsn_attach_plots: the base plot is an unrecognized plot
type; may get unexpected results.
fatal:Variable (mj_length1) is undefined
fatal:Execute: Error occurred at or near line 6644 in file
$NCARG_ROOT/lib/ncarg/nclscripts/csm/gsn_code.ncl

The error goes away when I use gsn_csm_contour_map (but I need to use
gsn_csm_map).

Any ideas how to get around this problem?
