Yes, this is a common practice. While switching NCARG_ROOT should be the
only thing you need to do, you'll also want to make sure that path to the
version of NCL you want is higher in PATH variable than the others.
Finally, if the directories are in drastically different subfolders, you
may need to change the NCL_COMMAND as well, although usually the change in
NCARG_ROOT will take care of the switch in NCL_COMMAND locations.
