Micah,

I honestly don't know if you will need to build from source. It is worth the effort to try one of the binary files first.
I would start with one of the RHEL 5.6 RedHat binaries. You can see a list of the different binaries at:

http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Download/list_of_binaries.shtml

If this doesn't work, then send email to ncl-install (not ncl-talk) with the error message, and we'll see if there's something else you can try.
