Yes, I will file a ticket on this so that it doesn't get lost. Offhand
I would think KML should be a quick one to add. I'll ponder list of
others; in many cases I suspect the only barrier is simply a matter of
tracking down example datasets for testing.

Shapefile is the format that gets all the attention, but as you likely
know, we also support MapInfo, Generic Mapping Tools, and Tiger
formats, using OGR in the manner you describe (maybe my imagination,
but it seems like the OGR formats list has grown substantially since I
last checked when we introduced shapefile). Some map better to NCL's
NetCDF-ish data model than others.
