NCL *automatically* handles variables with the _FillValue attribute.
NCL does not require a (say) 'if' statement to check the values.

Note: You mention FillValue. That is not recognized, only _FillValue

Also ... 1e36 is a commonly used _FillValue. It looks like the data
has 1e36 'somewhere'.
