Using wrf_user routines with other models

The wrf_user routines seem like a great resource for WRF users, and when
I look at the example page (
http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/OnLineTutorial/Graphics/NCL/NCL_examples.htm
) I see lots of things I would like to do for OTHER models. My somewhat
vague question is how difficult would it be adapt those to other
models. Naively it seems like there are three possible approaches:

1. Look at the code for the wrf_user library, and change any
model-specific code to that of the model that you would like to use.
2. Convert the grib/netcdf output file for the model being used to LOOK
like a WRF output file.
3. Just forget the idea altogether and write what you want to do in NCL.

i'm hoping an expert might give me advice on which approach might be best.

Thanks,

Jim
