It would be nice to have Taylor Diagrams that also allowed us to show the raw standard deviations on the axes and well as skill isopleths as there are on other variants of the taylor plot.

Try searching the web (or the NCL website) for "taylor_diagram.ncl". A google search gave it to me as the first link. The second link was here: http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/taylor.shtml , where there is a link to it.
