O.k. I see the issue now. This is related to an earlier problem I had with
missing values in the coordinate arrays. We have an issue with parallel
input/output where we get missing values in the coordinate arrays. We don't
have a way around this at present. So, the short term solution is to modify
the sea ice diagnostic package to use separate grid variables. Sorry to
raise the alarm bells and it does not appear to be an issue with the
thinning algorithm.
