    I believe that you can't do both in one function. May have to write a
    wrapper function which selects %e or %f depending on the number of
    non-zero decimal digits you select as exceeding your digit limit.
    Personally I would prefer to see a 'e ' appear after maybe 2/4 digits
    though.
