Front end GUI or Widet?

Perhaps a dumb question - but...

Has anyone built a gui to sit on top of ncl, so that it is easy to
interactively select and display fields in a file (or files) - a bit
like a "super ncview" application.

If not (which we suspect might be the case) what would you suggest
(GrADS, IVE, ...?)
