Assuming you are trying to plot POP ocean data, you must make sure that
you set lat2d and lon2d as attributes to your data array, as is shown here:

and is described at the top of the page here:
http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/popscal.shtml
If you are doing this, or if this doesn't help you, please attach your
script and send it to the group so that we all may look at it. Also let
us know of any error messages you are getting when you run your script.
