How to add vertical text to a plot?

Dear all,

I'd like to add some vertical text to the left side of a plot (better
not attached to the plot). All the examples here are horizontal
texts: http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/text.shtml, and I didn't
find any resource on vertical text. I wonder whether there is a way
to do it.
