Dear Mary, this is the output I get from your instructions:

also, with my own data what i get is:

ncl 1> ncl_convert2nc HADCM3_B2_prec_1960-2099.grb

I should point out that in the same folder I also have tow files, with
extensions .ctl and .gmp.
