My apologies for not getting back to you since yesterday morning! I'm
in Texas: The intercontinental differences do play out and I was busy
qith a supercomputer problem most of the day!

The codetable tells NCL how to read different files originating from
different sources. I note that MY $NCARG_ROOT doesn't point to the
lib/ncarg subdirectory (and this is on a working system) but to the
top-level directory. It must work: I process grib2 GFS data routinely.
  Thus I suspect your $NCARG_ROOT should point to /data2/share/ncarg

What directory is ncl executed from ("which ncl")?
