I apologize, I didn't see that you had posted here and ncl-install as well.

Do you have libpng at all on your system?

What does the following report:

   ls -l /usr/X11/lib/libpng*

What about:

   ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/libpng*

?

How did you try to upgrade your libpng?
