Just a note here: if you are starting with an NCGM file and using ctrans/convert to get to a PNG, your
images will not be as high-quality as if you start with a PS file and go to PNG.
Have you tried going to a PS file instead of an NCGM, and then using 
convert:
   convert -trim -geometry 1000x1000 -density 300 file.ps file.png
Of course, you may want to change the -geometry and/or density values.
