The question of interpolation in NCL

Dear users,
  One of the method used in NCL is inverse distance weighted method. When I
give new coordinate to interpolate, does NCL calculate the new value with
all of the old points, or just use the adjacent points? In my guess, the
outcome of interpolation should be smooth, but I get a decreasing value
bewteen two points instead of smiliar value. Any suggestions? Thank you.
