Drawing Many Markers is Slow

Hello, I am trying to make a scatter plot using
gsn_csm_xy. I have > 500,000 points. The default
behavior of gsn_csm_xy is to draw lines and that
is very fast (< 1 second). However, when I specify
xyMarkLineMode="Markers" it takes a long time
to draw all the markers (7 seconds for an "x" and
35 seconds for a solid circle).

I am drawing an X11 plot.

Is there any way to speed up this process ?
