Hi all,

This is a heads up about some changes the NCL team is making to
graphical defaults in NCL. These changes will be in the next release
(NCL 6.1.0-beta). See the attached images for a comparison.

We are shooting for a May 2012 release date.

These five changes may result in your graphics looking different (and,
we hope, better):

  - The default font will be helvetica. (http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Graphics/Images/font21.png
)

  - The default color table will be changed to one called
"ncl_default". (http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Graphics/ColorTables/ncl_default.shtml
)

  - Whatever color table is currently in use will be automatically
spanned for color-filled contours, and colored vectors and streamlines.

  - The default function code will be "~" (function codes are used for
changing fonts, and doing superscripts and subscripts in graphical
strings).

  - Labelbar labels will automatically be "strided" if they overlap.

If and when you download NCL V6.1.0, you can keep any of the old
default behaviors by creating or modifying the ~/.hluresfile and
adding the following lines:

*Font : 0
*wkColorMap : default
*cnSpanFillPalette : False
*vcSpanLevelPalette : False
*stSpanLevelPalette : False
*TextFuncCode : ~
*lbLabelAutoStride : False

If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, please
email ncl-talk.
