A side point.

As noted below, ascii files are extremely inefficient in terms of space.
Consider:
    x = -1234.5678

In ascii, with 8 bits (2 bytes) for each character. With 10 characters
it requires 80 bits. The same number as type 'float' takes 32 bits.
