Hi Hui,

The diagonal line is a known issue, and there's a tentative fix for it
in the upcoming 6.2.1. It happens when the map background is
entirely homogenous -- all land or all ocean.

The PDF plot came out in landscape for me, running the latest
development code -- I can't recall if there was a fix to specifically
address the issue between 6.1.0 and now.

So, yes, I think both problems will be addressed in the next version.
 I don't know of good work-arounds for these issues in the meantime;
 let us know if you need an intermediate version.
