Sourish,

I recommend installing V5.1.1 from binary. We have 32-bit and 64-bit
Linux binaries compiled with gcc 4.3.2, which should work for your
4.3.4 system. These binaries contain libnio.a.

  - Login to http://www.earthsystemgrid.org, login, and select "Latest
NCL release" from the Shortcuts menu.
  - Click on "NCL 5.1.1 binaries (not OPeNDAP-enabled)
  - Download either:

NCL 5.1.1 32-bit binary for i686 chips for LINUX (compiled with gcc
4.3.2)

or

NCL 5.1.1 64-bit binary for x86_64 chips for LINUX (compiled with gcc
4.3.2)

The installation instructions are at: http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Download/install.shtml
