Aha. I found that there was no libgfortran.so link to libgfortran.so.1,
so once I created that the compile ran:

pulsar:~> ncargex cpex08 -clean

NCAR Graphics Fortran Example <cpex08>

  Copying cpex08.f

  Copying cpexcc.f

Compiling and linking...
pgf77 -fPIC -O -o cpex08 cpexcc.f cpex08.f -L/usr/local/ncarg/lib
-L/usr/X11R6/lib -lncarg -lncarg_gks -lncarg_c -lX11 -lXext -lgfortran
cpexcc.f:
cpex08.f:

Executing <cpex08>...
 PLOT TITLE WAS EXAMPLE 8
 INTEGER WORKSPACE USED 120
    REAL WORKSPACE USED 400
    AREA MAP SPACE USED 93050
 PLOT TITLE WAS EXAMPLE 8
 INTEGER WORKSPACE USED 120
    REAL WORKSPACE USED 400
    AREA MAP SPACE USED 865044
FORTRAN STOP

Metafile file is named cpex08.ncgm.

Next I will need to see about getting my user's files to compile, but I
am more optimistic now. Thank you for the guidance.

Chris
