Following up on my own post with a clarification -- my
cloud top is plane-parallel, so I need the very simple
transformation of r,theta to cartesian plot units. That
rules out (I think) converting to lat/lon to use a
polar stereographic projection, since this introduces
a projection from a sphere onto a tangent plane (?)
