    1)
    the rasterization of a contour plot is separate from the gsn templates. those
    templates just invoke stuff going on behind the scenes.

    2) The default mechanism is for the raster routine to determine what your grid
    is (it can tell the size) and determine the value of the raster cell by the
    center value of the grid cell. It places the raster color in the center and
    draws the rectangular box out to fill the grid cell.

    3) there is a new mechanism that allows the user to draw raster cells by the
    boundaries of the cell which will take into account non-rectangular cells. this
    is primarily used for curvilinear or other special grids.
