Hi maurice, i can answer your first question. the technique should work
for both.
xyDashPatterns = NhlNewDashPattern(wks,pattern) ; is for xy lines
cnLineDashPattern= NhlNewDashPattern(wks,pattern)
the xy version is demonstrated at:
