(flexible) interpolation from grid to points

Hi all,

So far I have been using linint2_points to get climate values interpolated
bilinearly from a grid to arbitrary lon/lat locations.
Now I need to use more than the nearest 4 points to interpolate; is there a
function/option for that?
Also, is there any grid-to-point interpolating function that lets the user
choose the interpolation method?
