Jamie,

Thanks for the tip on grepping ncl's output for the string fatal. This
catches the error of calling addfile on non-existent files,.

FYI, based on what Bob Tomas told me, I tried adding begin and end
statements to your ncl commands. When I do this, ncl aborts when trying
to access the non-existent variable, which is similar to what happened
in my script.
