How to change default contour separation on color contour plots ?

I am constructing panels of color contour plots. I want to use the
default contour spacings and limits on each plot (rather than having
to set each one of them individually and manually). However, since
there are many panels on one page, the default contour spacing always
tends to give around twice as many contours on each plot as one would
like, given that each plot is fairly small, and too many contours
obscure the details and also the colors, and make the plots hard to
interpret.

I would like to allow the contour levels and range to be set
automatically for each plot, but I am wondering if there is a way to
request automatic scaling with only half the number of contours per
plot for example ?.
