Hi Helen,
I don't know of a way to "scale" the number of contour levels in the way
you wish. You might try setting cnMaxLevelCount:
http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Graphics/Resources/cn.shtml#cnMaxLevelCount
which allows you to set the maximum number of contours. Note that the
behavior of cnMaxLevelCount depends somewhat on the setting of
cnLevelSelectionMode.
