The HDF file is, as you note, not COARDS conformant.
The geolocation variable contains both latitude
and longitude. These should be separate varables
with COARDS conforming units [eg, degrees_north
and degrees_east]. In fact, the hdf4sds_6 example at
    http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Applications/HDF.shtml
explicitly extracts and create lat & lon arrays with
COARDS conforming units.

If you want to use GrADS, please write to the GrADS users
forum. Maybe someone there can help you.

You mention MODIS, TRMM, ... I speculate you will encounter
many issues if you want to use GrADS.
